July 2, 2023Water Testing Update (6/30/23)
ILPOA completed testing for e. Coli ahead of the 2023 fourth of July weekend. We are happy to report that the test results were acceptable across all locations with very low levels of EColi found across all the samples. The detailed results are available below. EPA acceptable limits are 126 ppm, and our highest sample shows <15 ppm.
In addition to the great E.coli results, we also received our most promising readout from Algal testing since we started our testing program in support of the Lake Restoration efforts in 2020. The full report is available below.
Our consultant Dr. Jennifer Jones offered this commentary regarding the results:
“At the end of the 2022 season, the algal samples collected in Indian Lake revealed the presence of favorable algal taxa which had not been detected in prior samples. This was quite encouraging since it indicated that the algal community in Indian Lake was beginning to shift from its current HAB (harmful algal bloom) dominant state. The most recent samples collected on June 16 2023 revealed the presence of numerous beneficial algal taxa that include the most favorable diatoms and chrysophytes. These two taxa require good to excellent water quality and are indicators that the water quality of Indian Lake is improving as a result of the current restoration program. The HAB’s are not currently the dominant algal taxa by biovolume and cell concentration. This will support increases in favorable food for the zooplankton which are the primary food for the lake fishery. Ongoing sampling efforts will reveal whether these samples are outliers or a new favorable trend that can be attributed to a shift in the lake for the better. “
Sis Bio and the Lake Restoration board are very encouraged by the recent results, and we have received numerous comments from Members regarding the improved clarity of the lake.
Have a safe 4th of July weekend.
